The local laird, Sir James Grant, founded this pre y li le town in 1765 on the banks of the River Spey. Tomintoul stands on the remote Banffshire moors, the creation of the 4th Duke of Gordon. Balmoral Castle lies in the shadow of Mt. Lochnagar and was bought for Queen Victoria in 1852 by her beloved Prince Albert.
